There has been in recent years an explosion of conflicts resulting inevitably in many refugees seeking asylum in Europe.

The absence of safe routes and inadequate responses by European governments, including the UK leaves many asylum claimants living in limbo. Poor accommodation, insecure status, without permission to work the UK must seem a hostile environment.  Indeed, this is the government’s stated intention.

The other side of this story is the goodwill and genuine concern of many people who want our society to live up to its responsibilities toward people who are in need of sanctuary on our shores.

In this Refugee Week event at Union Chapel, we aim to have a conversation with people who are aware of what is happening in London’s neighbourhoods and what more can be done to create a welcoming environment and values the positive initiatives for community building.

The meeting is for all concerned to build positive, integrated communities and want to ensure that people fleeing war and conflict are provided with the safety and protection they need together with a space to build new lives.

The conversation will take place under the Chatham House rule.
