A culmination of a composition/performance series that forms part of Union Chapel’s Organ Education Programme. In 2021 composition students from Goldsmiths worked with emerging organists over a 4 month period to compose pieces inspired by Union Chapel and its unique organ. Once the chapel reopened these works were recorded and filmed to produce a concert.
The programme is designed to encourage emerging composers to explore writing for organ, an instrument not always accessible to them. It also aims to offer emerging organists the opportunity to learn how to work with composers and perform new music. The programme was established in 2014 by Composer and Music Director of the Organ at Union Chapel, Claire M Singer.
“It’s really important to not only embrace the historic organ repertoire but also help it to grow. It is important to offer opportunities to composers and performers (new, emerging and established), encouraging them to spend time with the instrument, take risks, push the boundaries of the current repertoire and continue to celebrate this wonderful instrument full of endless sonic possibilities. Thank you and congratulations to all the composers and organists of our 2021 series who have all written and performed fantastic new work” - Claire M Singer
