The Tigray province in North Easter Ethiopia has entered into a bitter conflict engaging the province’s independence movement, and both Ethiopian and Eritrean troops.  A humanitarian crisis has ensued, which together with the Covid 19 pandemic has resulted in a large scale refugee crisis.

This webinar aims to shed light on developments in the region so that it does not disappear from the public view. 

We will be joined by distinguished journalist Martin Plaut who is considered a leading expert in the region.

We will also be joined by members of the Ethiopian and Eritrean diaspora, who have working hard to support the situation.

Martin Plaut

Martin Plaut is a journalist and academic specialising in conflicts in Africa, especially the Horn of Africa. He worked as a BBC News journalist from 1984 to 2012 and is a member of Chatham House. As of 2019, He was a senior research fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies of the University of London.

Mebrat Deres

Mebrat Deres was born in Eritrean and is a veteran of the 30 years independence struggle of the country. She is a senior systemic psychotherapist, with experience of training and supervising practitioners, both in private and in public sector, for over 25 years. Mebrat has a good insight into the Eritrean and Ethiopian conflicts’ traumatic consequences on the people. She is passionate about making a difference in people's lives and in co-creation practices that make the world a better, fairer and healthier place to live in. Mebrat is particularly interested in anti-oppressive practices of working with people, including refugees for peace and reconciliation.

Berhanu Kassayie

Originally from Ethiopia, Berhanu has been a senior lecturerat Birkbeck University of London in development economics and policy studies with interest in political economy of development in Africa and Central and Eastern Europe, He is also a qualified senior manager with over fifteen years’ experience working in the Third Sector in strategic project development, policy research, organisational development and managing a programme of projects including the development of a social enterprise.

With  an MA in Political Economy, MSc in Marketing & Product Management and PhD in Development Policy Studies, Berhanu has sat on a number of regional and national strategic and research advisory networks in the UK.

Moses Woldeselassie

Dr Moses Woldeselassie was born in Eritrea, which he was forced to leave because of the ongoing conflict there. He went to Denmark as a refugee. Following studies leading to his PhD, he has developed a career as a methodical digital consultant in the public sector, banking, healthcare, life science, telecome and digital Africa. He has continued his passionate concern for the Eritrean people. Working together with the diaspora communities in the UK, Europe and the USA he looks forward to an end to the current dictatorship, peace in the region and Eritrea achieving its full potential
