Heritage
Union Chapel’s heritage programme has been working with new and existing practitioners, we find creative ways for children, young people, local vulnerable families, marginalised communities and existing gig audiences to continue to discover, contribute to and connect with our non-conformist heritage.
Founded in 1799 by a group of ‘radical activist’ nonconformist Christians, Union Chapel’s (UC) founding principal was to be a ‘Friend for All’. Enshrined in the deeds this continues to this day. In 1991 Union Chapel Project (UCP) was formed as a charity, to open up the space to as many people as possible and develop the building for cultural and community use
This heritage is valued by experts and the local community alike because it is a story of a minority group who were supressed for their seemingly radical beliefs and who gained significant popular support because of their humanitarianism and eventually becoming a powerful social and political force within society, creating great change that we still experience today.
