CLIMATE AND PAST COLONIALISM

5TH OCTOBER 2022, DOORS 18:30

Colonialism has taught us to see people and the natural world as resources. Colonisers would extract the natural resources that were valuable to them, and in doing so they displaced, commodified, and murdered the Indigenous communities living on this land. Many of these Indigenous communities believed they had a responsibility for the ecosystems around them and followed sustainable practices. But these practices were abandoned by the colonisers in favour of exhausting the land of its wealth. Climate justice requires us to recognise the impact of past colonialism, to challenge the worldview we have inherited, and to learn from Indigenous communities today.

Dorothy Grace Guerrero, Head of Policy at Global Justice Now, will share with us some of the long-lasting injustices that were caused by colonialism and what we can learn from Indigenous peoples and their sustainable practices. We’ll be joined by Sagrada Familia playing traditional instruments from the Andes.
