Union Chapel will be hosting a special evening of comedy for Refugee Week. Laff-Uccino has been put together by social enterprise HAVEN Coffee and will feature some of the biggest names in comedy, including Nish Kumar, Rosie Jones, Rhys James with MC Kiri Pritchard-McLean on MC. Laff-Uccino takes place on June 19 and tickets are priced £22.50.
London-based HAVEN Coffee is a social enterprise that aims to break false narratives around refugees and migrants through arts and culture. By promoting artists and artwork from people with a refugee background Laff-Ucino aims to bring refugee communities and UK society together.
This special gig will be the 8th instalment of an initiative which began in December 2019. The line-up includes talented comedians from refugee & migrant backgrounds performing for their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gig, plus refugee participants from the weekly stand-up workshops they run, under the guidance of professional comedian and Union Chapel Church congregation member Sam Williams.
Union Chapel Church has a long history of supporting refugees. They have a small, dedicated team working closely with Islington Council to support asylum seekers who are living in government-funded hotels. Their team works to provide advocacy and practical support to people living in the hotels, to enable them to keep their dignity and be part of the local community. They work in partnership with Praxis to help people access legal support for complex cases, and with Voluntary Action Islington to support people to share their skills with others.
The Margins Project, the frontline charity based at Union Chapel that works with and for those facing homelessness and pertinent social justice issues, is now seeing 10 refugees a week in need of their services. They recently joined with HOPE Worldwide and Homeless Link to meet with Shadow Attorney General Emily Thornberry for policy discussions regarding the rise in homelessness, with a particular focus on refugee homelessness. Tickets for Laff-Ucino cost £22.50 and can be booked on the Union Chapel website here.
