Everyone had an excellent time at our opening events for A Canvas of Courage on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We are deeply thankful to all who came along, where we saw dance and musical performances from Hong Kong, North Korea, and Uyghur diaspora artists. Artists coming from repressive situations discussed how art is best used for enacting social change, and on Sunday people coming into the space created a community wall in solidarity with the oppressed in Asia and worldwide.
Jens Galschiøt gave a discussion on how his masterful Pillar of Shame plugged him into the Hong Kong democracy movement. We have a replica of the original at our exhibition. The work originally stood in Victoria Park in Hong Kong, and then at the University of Hong Kong, until it was removed in 2021 by Hong Kong's post-handover government. We were also joined by Lumli Lumlong, an infamous Hong Kong diaspora artist duo making ripples in the pro-democracy and human rights art scene.
Our exhibition is still open till the 10th December, 10-18:00. Please come along with friends, community and school groups whilst there's still time! It is an excellent opportunity to educate yourself on solidarity with the global oppressed through art.
