Be The Change - Free weekly applied theatre & creative arts sessions

2 July 2025

As part of its evolving programme, The Margins Project hosts 'Be The Change', a free weekly applied theatre and creative arts project, created and delivered by Islington People’s Theatre. This National Lottery funded project helps build confidence, wellbeing, and creative self-expression for adults navigating homelessness, mental health recovery, or recovery from substance abuse.

Every Thursday, 6.30-8.30pm

The inclusive workshops engage participants with applied theatre practices including acting techniques; comedy & clowning work; physical theatre; devising; improvisation and creative writing.

Run in ten-week blocks, the current block of sessions focuses on ‘Approaches to Acting’ and explores methods including Stanislavski, Chekhov, Meisner, Theatre of the Oppressed and more, with guest professionals leading the workshops.

Taking place at Lower Hall, the workshops are FREE to attend, no experience is needed, and you can join at any point. The weekly project runs until Spring 2026.

For further information see IPT’s website weekly Blog here or email [email protected] to express interest.

What participants had to say:

"I have responded well to the project. I have gained a pathway to recovery. I am acquiring people skills and using techniques in real life"

[would you like to see a weekly dropin set up throughout the year] "Yes I would like it to address the theme of one world one identity inclusivity and diversity. Harmony among nations"

"I thoroughly enjoy the mix, the people, the enthusiasm, the talent, the willingness to share lived and creative experience"

"The chance to express myself and improve my assertiveness skills. I couldn't participate if it wasn't free! Very enjoyable and lucky to have you all"

The Margins Project, based at Union Chapel, is a frontline charity offering a range of services supporting people facing homelessness and other critical living crisis. These services, run in three interconnected programmes, are designed to improve the immediate, interim, and long-term living conditions of our guests.
